Dr. O'Connolly is born in Galway, Ireland, in 1943, and qualified in medicine in 1969 at University College Galway. Following his internship in Galway he took a First Class honours degree in Pathology in 1972.
In 1973 he married Dr. med. Monika Ott from Nuremberg and since then has been working in Germany.
He rotated through surgery, gynaecology, medicine and anaesthesiology, took specialist qualifications in anaesthesiology and general medicine.
From 1980 onwards he worked as a general practitioner in Nuremberg in addition to doing the morning anaesthetic ‘List’ in Clinic Hallerwiese, in Clinic Cnopf’sche Kinderklinik, the clinic for plastic surgery Dr. Gsell and the clinic for vascular surgery Dr. Stumptner.
In 1985 he began to specialise in psychotherapeutic techniques and took his first Diploma in 1986. He was analysed over a period of 5 years by Prof. J. Danis in Munich, a Kleinian Psychologist.
For many years he combined his interests in psychotherapy with his interest in general practise. Since 2000 he has been exclusively occupied with psychoanalytic group and individual therapy.
For his German clients he has held self-awareness groups and intensive seminars in Ireland and Germany for many years.
He has a special interest in 'Balinth Groups’ and in Laban movement analysis.
Gene Newlove, Laban’s assistant for many years when he worked in England, has been very helpful for him on this field.
